Some sessions just feel effortless.

From the moment these two stepped into the gardens, everything seemed to slow down. The sunlight filtered through the trees, the breeze caught her dress just enough, and they spent more time laughing at each other than paying attention to my camera—which, honestly, is exactly how I like it.

The University of Alberta Botanic Garden is one of my favourite places to photograph engagement sessions. Every turn offers something different. Quiet forest paths, beautiful ponds, vibrant gardens, and tucked-away corners that feel like you've escaped the city completely. It creates the perfect backdrop without ever taking the attention away from the couple.

What I loved most about this evening wasn't the location, though.

It was them.

There was no awkward posing or forced smiles. They danced together in the grass, twirled until they were dizzy, stole quiet moments by the water, and somehow made the entire evening feel like it was just another date night. Those are always the photographs that end up meaning the most—the genuine moments in between the prompts.

One of my favourite parts of every engagement session is watching couples relax as the evening goes on. It usually starts with, "We're awkward in front of a camera," and ends with, "That was actually so much fun."

These two were no exception.

As golden hour settled over the gardens, the light became soft and warm, wrapping everything in that dreamy summer glow photographers constantly chase. Sitting beside the waterfall, sharing quiet conversations, and finishing the evening on the dock as the sun disappeared behind the trees... it was the perfect way to end the session.

Engagement sessions are about so much more than beautiful photos.

They're a chance to slow down together in the middle of wedding planning, celebrate this season of life, and become comfortable in front of the camera before the wedding day. By the time the wedding arrives, we're no longer strangers—we've already shared an evening together, laughed together, and created memories before the big day.

If their engagement session is any indication, it's going to be filled with laughter, quiet moments, and so much love.

I honestly can't wait to capture the next chapter of their story.
